Planting Strawberries

We got 32 plants from our local nursery at the farmers market about a month ago. The plants sat outside hardening up through a few cold weeks before we got around to planting them. A big strip of carpet covers the whole bed and we just planted through holes cut at regular spacings. The carpet keeps weeds at bay, retains heaps of moisture underneath and best of all, keeps the fruit nice and clean when they emerge.

We spread a bit of dynamic lifter fertiliser in the planting holes before they went in and other than watering when needed, that should be it until the fruit starts.

To My Best Friend

I lost my best friend yesterday but I kept the promise I made to him.

Always the funny guy!

I said if he was ever in pain and needed me that I would make the right decision, I owed him to end any suffering.

Yesterday Jack slipped in the paddock and broke his shoulder.  It should have been the hardest decision in the world but it wasn’t, he needed me and I ended his suffering.

Jack was 3 days short of his 25th birthday, a long innings for a pony already.  He has been my best friend for 20 years.  It was love at first sight.  Right from the word go we were made for each other, even though the day I tried him out he threw me off twice!  3 days later we had our first show and we won every single event.  I think mum was getting a bit embarrassed sitting on the sidelines amongst the other Pony Club mothers.

first show ever and we clean up!

I remember a teacher at school wondering who I was going to take to my first school ball when I wasn’t allowed to take Jack!

He was a champion at everything he did, he loved competing and the bigger the crowd the better he went.

Whenever he finished a day competing he loved nothing more than fish and chips, soaked in beer.  He stole cans of coke and could down them in one go before you even noticed.  We always knew it was time to move the herd to new grass because Jack had already jumped out.

He lived with his best friend Daemar (my sister’s pony) ever since they were young.  When we had the chance to get Daemar back and reunite the two old men in their retirement, it was like they had never been apart.  They grazed nose to nose and have done since that day.

Yesterday Daemar, John and I were all there with him and he died in my arms.  Below is a poem that horse people often quote when they lose a beloved animal.

I love him so much.

The Rainbow Bridge Story

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigour; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.

The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together

We have finally ended our year long broodmare hunt with the purchase of Caprice.  She is a Holsteiner Westphalian cross and very well bred.  She has come up to us from Ashburton, it took a few days but she is finally here!

Her pedigree is available online here

She is 7 years old and has had one foal.  She is unfortunately a broodmare due to a fence injury as a yearling.  We are looking forward to some stunning babies.

She is currently madly in love with Daemar and is never more than a few steps from him.  When the mares start to pick on her she runs behind him for protection.  We tried to point out that a 17hh whopping great warmblood mare was not really able to hide behind a 14hh pony.

This year she will be bred to the stunning athletic young Westphalian stallion EuroSport Heartbreaker.

I will try to get some better pictures of her but she is such a mooch all she wants to do is to stand and be cuddled.  We tried getting her to run around and show off her paces, but all she did was run and hide behind Daemar.
